- Semantic Relation: A Semantic Relation is a Relation that maps two or more Concepts to the Boolean Truth Set.
- AKA: Meaning Relation, Semantic Relationship, Relationship
- Context:
- (Of type) Can be a Domain Independent Relation (Generic) or Domain Dependent Relation depending on whether the relation is restricted to concepts from a specific Domain.
- (Of type) Can be a Binary Relation or N-ary Relation depending on the number of concepts that are being related.
- Can be used in Reasoning about the world. E.g. [Socrates ISA human] therefore [Socrates is mortal].
- (Of type) Can be an [[Equivalance_Relation?]], [[Hierarchichal_Relation?]], and [[Associational_Relation?]].
- Can be referenced by [[Second-order_Conceptual_Structures?]] such as the [[Metonymy_Relation?]], [[Blended_Space_Relation?]], [[Metaphor_Relation?]], [[Analogy_Relation?]],
- Can hold over a period of time.
- Can hold until some Event occurs
- Examples:
- "A rainbow is multicolored." (a [[Property)_Relation?]]; generic relation)
- "Socrates is mortal." (a Subsumption Relation; generic relation)
- "A car has wheels." (a Meronomy Relation; domain specific relation)
- "Paul Martin succeeded Jean Chretien." domain specific relation.
- A commonly used example in Semantic Relation Detection researech is whether an organization and a physical location in a sentence are in a “organization O is headquartered in location L” relation.
