    • Silicon dioxide, alternatively known as silica, is a compound made from silicon and oxygen ubiquitous in nature and is notably present in the Earth's crust (which it makes up 59% of), various rocks, and even within the tissues of humans and other organisms. It primarily exists in a crystalline form with common variance such as quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite.

      Produced synthetically or sourced naturally, Silicon dioxide serves many practical uses in society - in construction materials such as Portland cement and concrete, industries such as glass and ceramics, products like desiccants, grinding and polishing processes, and notably, as an anticaking agent in food and supplements. As a food additive, silicon dioxide prevents the clumping together of moisture-absorbing ingredients, maintaining the texture and shelf life of foods.

      Generally acknowledged as safe for consumption by the FDA, multiple studies have shown no risk of consuming silicon dioxide as a food additive in relation to cancer, organ damage, or adverse reproductive health effects. However, the safety of nano-sized particles of silicon dioxide, despite being previously assessed and determined safe in a 1974 paper, is being reassessed based on more recent research. The FDA recommends an upper limit of 2% silicon dioxide by total weight in food products, primarily due to the lack of studies for higher concentrations.

      Possible hazards are linked to the long-term inhalation of silica dust, which could trigger silicosis, a lung disease, particularly in occupations like mining, construction, and steel industry.
