An XML File Format is a data file format that facilitates data exchange of structured data (in the form of XML Documents).

  • AKA: eXtensible Markup Language.
  • Context:
    • The representation uses matching open-tags and close-tags to identify elements.
    • Elements may also be composed of nested sub-elements, with the top element being referred to as the root-element.
    • Instantiable elements may sometimes be referred to as attributes.
    • The XML standard is managed by the World Wide Web Consortium.
    • XML is a subset of the Standard Generalised Mark-Up Language (SGML).
