A System Development Plan is a detailed plan that outlines the strategy and roadmap for developing a new system, which could be a software system, hardware system, or a combination of both.

  • Context:
    • It can (typically) be created during the initial phase of the System Development Lifecycle.
    • It can (often) be an output of a System Planning Task.
    • It can cover various aspects such as: planning, ideation, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
    • It can answer questions such as:
      • What technologies or materials will be required?
      • Who will manage the project?
      • Which teams and resources will be involved?
      • Who are the key stakeholders?
      • What are the external dependencies?
      • What are the success criteria?
      • What are the timelines and how have they been estimated?
      • What are the estimated costs and what assumptions have been used to calculate them?
    • It can be used as a guide for all stakeholders throughout the development process.
    • ...
  • Example(s):
    • one for a new spacecraft, detailing the materials, technologies, timelines, and resources required.
    • one for a new telecommunications network, outlining the key technologies, stakeholders, and success criteria.
    • a Software Development Plan.
    • ...
  • Counter-Example(s):
    • A Marketing Plan: This is a strategy for promoting and selling products or services, not a plan for system development.
    • A Project Charter: While this document defines the scope, objectives, and stakeholders of a project, it is more general and not specifically focused on system development.
