A Theocracy is a Form of Government in in which the ruling authorities is composed of a religious figure.

  • Example(s):
    • Ancient Egypt: The ancient Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was a god-king, and that he ruled on behalf of the gods.
    • Ancient Israel: The ancient Israelites believed that God was their king, and that they were his chosen people. Theocracy was a major part of ancient Hebrew society, and it is still practiced by some Jewish groups today.
    • Vatican City: The Vatican City is a small city-state located within Rome. It is the headquarters of the Catholic Church, and it is ruled by the Pope, who is considered to be the head of the Church.
    • Republic of Iran: The supreme leader is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and he has the power to veto laws passed by the parliament.
