Abstract

  • The aim of this book, as the authors state, is to provide a coherent and practical overview of the technologies currently being developed for accessing the textual information maintained in ‘Internet space’, most commonly but not exclusively, the World Wide Web. The overwhelming majority of the documents in this space are textual and not aimed at computer usability. Their sheer quantity raises the well-known problems of search and access: how to ªnd just those portions of documents that are relevant to some particular information need. Jackson and Moulinier focus on the solutions being developed for this problem that employ natural language processing techniques. These rely on additional linguistic knowledge concerning the texts being examined over and above their trivial data storage properties as strings of characters.
