    • Barbara Lee (1946-) is an American politician and social worker who has served as a U.S. representative from California since 1998. A member of the Democratic Party, Lee represents California's 12th congressional district, which is based in Oakland and covers most of the northern part of Alameda County.
      Lee was born in El Paso, Texas, in 1946. She grew up in a segregated South, where she faced racial discrimination on a regular basis. Despite these challenges, Lee excelled in school and went on to attend Mills College, where she was the president of the college's Black Student Union.
      After graduating from Mills College, Lee received a master's degree in social work from the University of California, Berkeley. She then worked as a social worker and community organizer, focusing on issues such as poverty, healthcare, and education.
      In 1990, Lee was elected to the California State Assembly. She served in the Assembly until 1996, when she was elected to the California State Senate. In 1998, Lee was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where she has served ever since.
