    • NOTE:
      • The Washington Post tested ChatGPT by having it write two sample admissions essays - one for the Common App and one for Harvard specifically. They then had an admissions expert evaluate the essays.
      • The expert found the ChatGPT-generated essays were mediocre and lacked the kind of personal reflection and compelling narrative that make for a strong admissions essay. The writing was vague, repetitive, and used platitudes rather than emotional experiences.
      • The expert noted that ChatGPT struggles to provide specific details and examples, make logical connections between ideas, and complete a coherent thought. This results in essays that don't effectively showcase the applicant.
      • While ChatGPT may be able to mimic certain elements of human writing style, it lacks the ability to reflect meaningfully on personal growth and convey a student's unique personality, background, and goals.
      • Admissions officers are likely getting better at detecting AI-generated content. Using ChatGPT for admissions essays could backfire and diminish an applicant's chances rather than helping them.
      • Students overwhelmed with applications may be tempted to use ChatGPT but should resist, as it is unlikely to produce an essay that makes them stand out. Applicants are better off using AI tools just to brainstorm rather than generate full essays.
    • In summary, while ChatGPT can produce superficially coherent essays, it lacks the nuance, originality, and personal narrative needed for a compelling admissions essay. Relying on it could undermine an applicant's chances rather than boost them.
