    • QUOTE: Any act which is intended to have an effect on the established social order is a political act. Political acts can be broken down (roughly) into the following types:
Decision-making: attempts to implement or change rules, policies, or procedures through the normal operation of the political system. Examples would be the creation of new laws or statutes by governing bodies or popular vote; filibusters, judicial review or presidential veto to prevent laws from taking effect; election and removal of officials; even political gamesmanship, like gerrymandering and voter fraud, would be attempts to subvert the system from within the system.
Civil opposition: attempts to implement or change rules, policies, or procedures through the application of social pressure, outside of normal political processes. Civil disobedience, protests and marches, investigations by newspapers or watchdog groups, or less acceptable forms of behavior (such as terrorism) are all attempts to pressure ruling bodies to make 'proper' decisions.
Insurgency and warfare: attempts to implement or change rules, policies, or procedures by forcibly removing the current leadership and/or destroying the current governing institutions. Insurgencies may be separatist (as in the American civil war), may be aimed at changing the power balance within the current system (as with the Zapatista insurgency in Mexico), may be aimed at replacing the current leadership with a new leadership in the same system (as in the British War of the Roses), or may be aimed at overthrowing the system entirely (as with the Communist revolution in China).
