    In 1961, Darwish was arrested by the Israeli authorities for his political activism. He was imprisoned for several months and then placed under house arrest. Despite the restrictions placed on him, Darwish continued to write and publish poetry.

    In the 1970s, Darwish became a leading figure in the Palestinian resistance movement. He helped to found the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and served on its executive committee. Darwish also worked as a journalist and editor for several Palestinian publications.

    In 1982, Darwish was forced to flee Beirut after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. He lived in exile in several different countries, including Egypt, France, and the United States. However, he never forgot his homeland and continued to write about the Palestinian people's struggle for freedom.

    Darwish returned to Palestine in 1996, after the signing of the Oslo Accords. He continued to write and publish poetry until his death in 2008.
