- Mahmoud Darwish (1941–2008) was a Palestinian poet and author who was regarded as Palestine's national poet. He won numerous awards for his works, including the Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize, the Lenin Peace Prize, and the Knight of Arts and Belles Lettres Medal from France.
Darwish's poetry is known for its lyrical beauty, its powerful imagery, and its deep commitment to social justice. He wrote extensively about the Palestinian people's struggle for freedom and self-determination, but his poetry also explores universal themes such as love, loss, and the search for meaning.
Darwish was born in the village of Birwa in Galilee, which was conquered by Israel in 1948. His family was displaced and forced to live in refugee camps. Darwish's early experiences of exile and dispossession shaped his poetry and his political views.
In 1961, Darwish was arrested by the Israeli authorities for his political activism. He was imprisoned for several months and then placed under house arrest. Despite the restrictions placed on him, Darwish continued to write and publish poetry.
In the 1970s, Darwish became a leading figure in the Palestinian resistance movement. He helped to found the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and served on its executive committee. Darwish also worked as a journalist and editor for several Palestinian publications.
In 1982, Darwish was forced to flee Beirut after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. He lived in exile in several different countries, including Egypt, France, and the United States. However, he never forgot his homeland and continued to write about the Palestinian people's struggle for freedom.
Darwish returned to Palestine in 1996, after the signing of the Oslo Accords. He continued to write and publish poetry until his death in 2008.

- Mahmoud Darwish (, 13 March 1941 – 9 August 2008) was a Palestinian poet and author who was regarded as Palestine's national poet. [1] He won numerous awards for his works. Darwish used Palestine as a metaphor for the loss of Eden, birth and resurrection, and the anguish of dispossession and exile. [2] [3] He has been described as incarnating and reflecting "the tradition of the political poet in Islam, the man of action whose action is poetry."[4] He also served as an editor for several literary magazines in Palestine.
